Buttons get pushed that trigger key events which determine the pattern of history.
Marshall Young, the fictional hero of this novel, finds himself present as the policy
of Manifest Destiny unfolds during the Civil War and afterward in the development
of the American West. The buttons are pushed, and questions arise as he nears the
final conflict which started long ago before the Civil War when he was a young man.
